How to get to “Whin knowe”.

We notice that many of our visitors are advised by route advisers to go to Fort William via Glasgow, Loch Lomond and the A82. This has some scenic advantages but is very slow and involves you in driving through Glasgow. Our preferred route to and from the south is
- To approach Glasgow via the M74 until just after Hamilton
- then to follow the M73 with signs for Stirling and the Kincardine Bridge.
- Continue towards Perth and Stirling via the A80 and M80
- Just past Stirling at Junction 11 take the first exit from the roundabout and follow signs for DOUNE (B824). Pass the monument to Col David Stirling of Long Range Desert Group and SAS fame and shortly pass through Doune.
- At Doune follow signs of Callandar and Crianlarich A84.
- At Lochearnhead the road becomes the A85. follow this to Crianlarich where you join the A82 to Fort William.
- “Whin knowe” is reached by taking the A82 out of Fort William in the direction of Inverness. A couple of miles from town, at Lochybridge junction, turn left at the mini-roundabout/pedestrian pelican lights and cross the bridge, follow the Mallaig road (A830) for 1 mile until it crosses the Caledonian Canal at Banavie. Turn right immediately and follow the B8004 Gairlochy for half a mile. The house is white and is set back a little from the road, on the right, behind some trees. (picture above) A name board at the road end says “Whin knowe”. OS ref for house is NN119777.
- You may wish to experience Loch Lomond on one of your journeys. To do this on the way North, follow the M74 and then M73 to join the M8 into Glasgow. Follow signs for Dumbarton/ Alexandria/ Loch Lomond/ Crianlarich/ Fort William (A82). It is usually very busy at weekends but getting lost in Glasgow is lots of fun and Glasgow folk are famously friendly and helpful. Probably better to return by this route.
