Two lovely Highland bullocks, on loan from a friend, have just arrived to do the job. Highland cattle grow very slowly and are not popular with commercial […]

Bookings for 2014

There are still a week available  in July but as always The Byre has booked up well this year. 65% of guests this year are returning visitors. Our most frequent fliers think they have been here nine times but I’ve lost count.  The dogs give then a massive welcome. They come twice a year so […]

Fàilte/welcome to “The Byre” at Whin Knowe

Self Catering Holiday Accommodation near Fort William, Scotland.

At “Whin Knowe”, Banavie, near Fort William you can rent a self catering holiday cottage of charm and character  with a magnificent view of Ben Nevis. The Byre is an ideal base for climbing, walking, kayaking, skiing, cycling or just a place in which to relax. Bikes can be stored in a barn or garage and a power washer is available for cleaning them.

Standing on its own, The Byre has a south facing aspect and superb views of the northern cliffs of Ben Nevis, Carn Mòr Dearg and the ski area on Aonach Mòr without being overshadowed by the big hills. In order to reduce the environmental footprint of the business some of The Byre’s electricity is generated by 16 solar panels on a nearby building.

The cottage is  surrounded by nine acres of croft land, roughly half of which is native woodland, predominantly birch and oak. There is a resident population of roe deer which often come close to the house, especially early in the morning and at dusk. Red deer pass through now and again and numerous species of birdlife may be seen. There is an active badger set nearby. The pine martens and stoats will see you and if you are lucky; very, very lucky you will see them. (If you’re not lucky we can show you marten scats!) In 2013 an otter was seen in the field in front of  The Byre.

  • The Byre, which is a new build detached cottage which has been built on the site of my old byre or cowhouse.
